ChatGPT Prompt: Anything Can Inspire

Treasure hidden in plain sight.

That’s what inspiration for writing can feel like.

The trick?

Looking in the right places.

I often find myself mindlessly clicking through news articles.

While doing so yesterday, I took a moment to appreciate just how unimaginably wild the world was.

News articles may be sensationalized but at their very core, they give us a glimpse into what goes on around us.

In fact, the news stories we read daily could easily serve as inspiration for our next writing projects.

So, I tried something a little left-field.

I created a ChatGPT prompt to generate unique writing prompts out of news stories.

It worked a treat.

It’s a great way to beat writer’s block.

All you have to do is copy and paste an excerpt from a news article into the prompt template below.

The excerpt you use should ideally summarize the story. If the article has a summary/key points box at the top, use this.

Fill in the prompt template blanks you feel would be most relevant. You don’t need to use them all.

Copy and paste the completed prompt into ChatGPT. Then, watch the magic unfold.

The Prompt Template 🤖:

"Let's work together to create a 2-3 sentence writing prompt based on the following news article. The goal is to spark my creativity and help me overcome writer's block by laying the foundation for a story. Please use the information from the news story as inspiration, without copying specific details. Use these additional input parameters to generate a writing prompt that suits my needs:

News article text:

[copy and paste news article text]

Desired genre or style for the writing prompt: [insert, e.g. fiction, non-fiction, mystery, sci-fi, fantasy]

Specific elements or themes to include in the prompt: [insert, if any]

Target audience for the story: [insert, if applicable]

Example 💻️ :

The fun thing about this strategy is that you can search for news articles within your genre of choice.

If you’re a sci-fi writer, browse through scientific news publications.

Want to write a political thriller? Refer to your favorite political news sources.

I copied and pasted the first few paragraphs of a BBC article I found in the Science category (source).

Here’s what happened.

Zoom in if you have to.

This might be my most enjoyable prompt yet.

Try it out.

Enjoy.

See you tomorrow 🙂
