🖱️ GET MORE CLICKS
The “TEM” Trick
Here’s a simple technique the pros use to get more clicks and views to a piece of content:
Write a headline that suggests the content is “expensive”.
A piece of content can be expensive in terms of:
Time: Show that the content took a lot of time to make.
Effort: Show that the content took a lot of effort to make.
Money: Show that the content cost a lot of money to make.
T-E-M.
💡 We give something more attention and credibility when it’s clear that a lot of time, effort, or money has gone into it.
Any type of content creator can use costly signaling to get more attention online.
But I’ll use a couple of YouTube headlines as examples:
“I Spent $1000 To Find the Best Polo” [link]
This video went viral on a small YouTube account. The headline makes it clear how much money went into creating the content.
“I Read 100 Self-Help Books. Here’s What I Learned…” [link]
You’ll see this headline format everywhere (because it works). The headline states how much effort has gone into creating the content. It has a high perceived value, so we click to check it out.
Remember, the amount of time, effort, or money you put into a piece of content doesn’t have to be extreme.
Stating any amount can be effective.
But the more valuable you can make the content seem, the more likely it is to be clicked and viewed.
Here’s another example…
This one is actually Template #40 from the Look At Hooks headline template database:
“[I/We] Tried [Number] Methods To [Action/Goal], And One Was The Clear Winner”
The template is inspired by this killer headline by The Spruce:
“I Tried 3 Methods To Keep My Roses Fresh, And One Was The Clear Winner”
The content seems valuable because it’s clear that a lot of time and effort has gone into it.
Costly signaling makes this headline much more effective than something like “Here’s The Best Method For Keeping Your Roses Fresh”.
Why?
Because the second one just doesn’t seem as valuable or credible.
To sum that up:
Use the TEM headline trick to increase the perceived (and actual) value of your your content.
It’s a great way to set yourself apart from other content creators and you’ll get a boost to your views as a result.
And that’s all for today!
